What the Health is a 2017 documentary that was released to uncover the findings of a writer and producer as he interviewed health organizations and physicians. The writer, Kip Andersen, came to the conclusion that meat and dairy products cause a number of health problems. The documentary appears to advocate for a plant based diet.

The documentary showed the different types of processing that meat and dairy go through and how carcinogens are present in the foods that we eat on a daily basis. The interviewer went through sample diets as displayed by different health organizations. Most health organization encourage protein consumption as part of a balanced diet. This leads to a conversation of what healthy eating looks like for most people.

Genetics play a huge role in the determining the right diet for each individual. Some people have a severe gluten allergy and not only benefit from avoiding  breads and cereals, but would be risking their wellness if they were to consume gluten in its different forms. And those who are diabetic or prone to diabetes may benefit from a Mediterranean diet that is heavy in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. A plant based diet is part of a healthy, balanced eating regimen. But each person must be thoroughly informed before adhering to a single diet system.

There are some foods to avoid or eat minimally regardless of genetics. Added sugars should be eaten minimally. The American Heart Association recommends a limit of 25 grams of added sugar for an adult woman and 35 grams for an adult man per day.  Excessive sugar increases the risk for dental caries, obesity, and  heart problems.  Sodium is another category to consume cautiously. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises against consuming more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day. Going over the recommended intake can lead to hypertension.

Foods that are high in bad cholesterol must be eaten minimally. There is good and bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol causes fats to build up in the arteries. People should have their Cholesterol levels tested and modify their diet based on the test results. Foods that are high in cholesterol include butter, red meat, and egg yolk.

As suggested by What The Health Documentary, a plant based diet is very rich in necessary nutrients. Sodium, added sugars, and bad cholesterol are also maintained at a minimal level through such a diet. Your Fort Worth Dentist cares about your overall well-being.
