Oil pulling is rinsing and swishing oil in your mouth for 20-30 minutes. Now who does that? And does it really work?

Ayurveda is a type of complementary and alternative medicine that originated in India about 3000 years ago. This system of medicine has upheld the benefits of oil pulling include but are not limited to prevention of tooth decay, halitosis, gingival inflammation, dryness of throat, cracked lips, and other systemic conditions.

Results of a studies done to evaluate the effects of oil pulling show the reduction of Streptococcus mutans (a bacteria that causes dental cavities and is linked with certain cardiovascular diseases) after oil pulling for 10-20 minutes every day for 1-2 weeks. The reduction of bacteria load in the mouth presents a better balance for teeth and gums to avoid decay and inflammation. Thereby avoiding stress to oral tissue. Oil pulling is at home remedy that can complement regular dental cleanings.

Gums provide periodontal support and are important in the stability of teeth. Gum disease can increase the risk of endocarditis, premature delivery in pregnant women, and poorly controlled blood sugar. Oil pulling in addition to a regular dental visit can prevent gum disease. Coconut oil is preferred oil for this swishing method because 50% of the fat is comprised of lauric acid, which kills bacteria.  This is yet another use of coconut oil that has been shown to benefit other body tissues. Swish gently till the oil turns white if you decide to add oil pulling to your regimen. It can help in improving oral health. It’s worth it since the oral cavity is the gateway to the body!
